Hello Parents/Guardians!
I can't believe we are into March already! Just a quick update on our learning thus far. We have been watching the Sens highlights as a learning tool; where we talk about the math we see in the score. This can be extended at home! As we only do this once a week, we invite you to talk about the score in games. (Who has more goals? How many more goals do they need to tie? etc). We also know how to represent the score in many different ways (tallies, words, pictures etc.) Lately the Sens haven't been doing so well, so we also focus on Growth Mindset. Where we use the vocabulary, "I Can't YET." and "a bump in the road." Sometimes we even watch the highlights of a game where our team doesn't win, to drive home the idea that we don't always win and THAT'S OK. But it's NOT okay to GIVE UP. As a classroom and as a school we have been focusing on community. We have decided to extend our learning about community and careers by having an ongoing 'Career Day.' We are inviting parents/guardians to send a 'selfie' of themselves at work with a short description of their career/the work they do. We invite parents who work from home or whose job is in the unpaid labour force as well. We are looking forward to sharing the pictures with the class and learning about the different careers in our community. Please send in pictures by Friday, March 23rd. Thanks for your support! Please send selfie and description to [email protected] We will be sending home blankets on Friday to be washed and returned for March Break. Please send in a grocery bag so students can bring their blanket home. We have been very busy the past couple weeks implementing the Sens into our daily learning! We have been doing Sens Math all year, but we have kicked it into high gear to impress Hot 89.9 in hopes of winning their ‘Hot for Sens’ Contest. Below we have detailed our fun activities and learning happening in the Puffin class! All our activities are curriculum based and SENS themed ! SENS DAY We all dressed in Sens gear and did a parade around the school. The entire school cheered for us and the Sens. Then we played pool noodle hockey in the gym, and our Principal Mrs. MacPhee was a goalie, as well as Miss Diane our EDP Supervisor. Below is the video we will submit to Hot 89.9! It highlights ALL of our Sens learning !! WOW did we ever have fun, and shhh don’t tell our friends they were also LEARNING! Math Sens Math- We watch the highlights of a recent game and talk about the math we see in the score. How many more goals does Toronto need to tie the game? How many more to win the game? How many total goals were scored? Then we represent the Sens score in different ways: tallies, on our fingers, check marks, writing the number, and then we put the score into ten frames. Symmetry- We are learning about symmetry by drawing some Sens faces! We learned that symmetry means the same on both sides! Mini Hockey Games- we engage in cooperative play (taking turns, sharing, collaboration) and keep the score of the game using tallies, ten frames or check marks. We play hockey using: straws to blow a pompom, finger flip hockey and on our mini ice rinks (water that has been frozen in a lasagna container) Surveys: We created questions and surveyed our classmates. Who should win the Stanley Cup? Who is your favourite team? We collected data using tallies and interpreted who the favourite was! Graphing- The class was asked a question and everyone gets one vote! Together, we co-created a graph and learned to interpret the results. What Sens player is our favourite? How do we know? What player is our least favourite? Inquiry/Literacy World/Maps- We have been wondering about the world and looking at maps. So we combined the two inquiries and students were tasked with finding the NHL team locations on the USA and Canada maps. We are also learning to match and identify letters and words. Non- Fiction Texts- We gathered some non-fiction texts from the library and discussed why and how they are different from fiction books. We learned they have facts, a table of contents and lots of pictures. Journal Writing- Everyday we write in our journals and practice our pencil grip and letter formation. We often copy from seasonal vocabulary sheets and the SKs have started using sentence starters. We added SENS sheets to complete our Sens learning! Students are copying the names of players, their position and Go Sens Go! Posters- We created ‘Go Sens Go’ posters and hung them up around the school after our team lost! We are learning about growth mindset and that we NEVER give up! Love,
the Puffins Welcome back ! We hope your break was restful and wonderful ! We are back into the swing of things in Team Puffin !!
This month we have started learning about popcorn words! A note was sent home in the note tote regarding the words we are learning each month. These words are called popcorn words because they keep popping up! Learning these words will help your child learn to read as they are words we often find in starter readers. Please find some time to practice these words, with your child. (Putting them on flash cards would be a great idea!) Please contact us if you did not receive the note with the words or need another copy. Inquiry Based Learning We are currently wondering about the world around us. We were inspired by the travels of our teachers during Christmas break and have been particularly interested in New York City. We loved learning about the subway trains, yellow taxis and skyscrapers etc. If you have any globes, world maps, books about different countries or New York City keepsakes please feel free to send them in to compliment our inquiry. We learn through exploring. If you need your materials returned/kept safe please write us in the note. Thanks so much! Reminders:

Miss McNeil Hello Parents,
We have had an amazing first week! We have sent home some important information in the Note Tote today.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Thanks and enjoy your weekend! Hello Parents,
We have been learning and having so much fun in the Puffin Class ! Since our last post we have been very busy. We caught Playoff Hockey Fever and implemented the Ottawa Senators into our daily routines and learning;
I tweet all of our daily learnings, and had been tweeting to the Ottawa Senators. CTV News saw what we were up to and asked if they could come visit the day of game 7. They ended up visiting another school, and showed our Sens parade on the news. We sent home some information about where to find the video, I also included it at the bottom of this post. We also participated in a kite workshop where we learned to build and design our own kite. We got to fly them outside and watch some really cool, HUGE kites. We are currently wondering about world maps, and have been inspired by Canada's birthday and the World Fair at our school. We have been making birthday cards for Canada, and exploring an atlas and a world map. After visiting the World Fair we flagged countries that we saw there, on the world map. **Stay tuned to see where we go with this inquiry. If you have anything that you think may add to this inquiry, please send it in! Reminders:

We have been very busy in the Puffin class! We hope you enjoyed the bird seed 'cookies' we made for Mother's Day. We thought you could hang them and watch the birds together. If you would like to make another batch, here is the recipe we used. Bird Seed Cookies 3/4 cup of flour 1/2 cup of water 1 envelope of unflavoured gelatine 3 tbsp corn syrup 4 cups bird seed Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Put cookie molds on wax paper. Spray cookie molds with non-stick spray. Scoop mixture into cookie molds and pack down. Use straws to poke a hole in the top, make sure it is all the way through. Let sit overnight and flip over to ensure it dries through. We are learning all day every day! Students have been learning through gathering time, small group activities and learning centres. Here are some specific learning goals we have been working on. Students are working on these goals at their own pace and will continue to do this throughout the Kindergarten Program. Don't worry if you're child has not mastered all of these skills. That is not the expectation right now. They have lots of time! We just want to share what we have been working on. This list is not exhaustive, It just provides a window into some of our learning goals. We are continuing all goals from the last blog post and currently adding these:
Religion - Learning about the season of Lent as a time to sacrifice as Jesus did but more importantly as a time for kindness and living in God's image - Puffins will learn the Easter story - Students are taking the reigns now and leading the daily Peace Pledge Numeracy
Literacy (in french and English)
Self Regulation
Well Being
Belonging and Contributing
Science
Music
The learning happening in this day certainly cannot be contained in a list but here is a picture of what we are working on and towards every day!
